The complete Canadian resume format guide

Short answer

Canadian resumes are 1–2 pages, have no photo, no date of birth, and no marital status. Use Canadian spelling, metric units where relevant, and a reverse-chronological layout.

Canadian resume conventions in one paragraph

A Canadian resume is one or two pages, has no photo, no date of birth, no marital status, and no mention of nationality or religion. It uses Canadian spelling, reverse-chronological order, and a clean single-column layout. That is the standard every Canadian recruiter expects. Deviate from it and you risk looking like you don't understand the market — even if your experience is strong.

What goes on the page

1. Header

  • Full name
  • City and province (not full address)
  • Email address and phone number
  • LinkedIn URL (optional but expected for most white-collar roles)

That's it. No photo. No "Objective" line. No DOB.

2. Professional summary

Three or four lines. State your target role, years of experience, and two or three of your strongest capabilities. Use Canadian spelling (organization, colour, centre, practise vs. practice, etc.) so your whole document reads consistent.

3. Experience

Reverse chronological. For each role:

  • Job title, company, city/province, dates (Month Year – Month Year)
  • Three to six bullets describing accomplishments, not responsibilities
  • Numbers where possible

Go back 10–15 years. Roles older than that can be summarized in one line or omitted entirely unless directly relevant.

4. Education

  • Degree, institution, city, year (or expected year)
  • Include Canadian equivalencies if your education was outside Canada and assessed (WES or similar)

5. Skills

A short list of hard skills relevant to the role. No progress bars, no star ratings. Just the names.

6. Certifications, volunteer, languages

Optional sections. Include if directly relevant to the role or if they strengthen your story (bilingual French/English, PMP, RCIC-IRB, PMP, etc.).

What to leave out

  • Photo. Never. Canadian employment law treats photos as a discrimination risk — some recruiters will discard a resume with a photo to protect the hiring process.
  • Date of birth. Same reason.
  • Marital status, religion, nationality. All illegal to consider in Canadian hiring; including them creates a problem for the employer.
  • Social Insurance Number. Never on a resume.
  • References line. "References available on request" is outdated. Take the space back.

Canadian spelling checklist

Use the Canadian variants:

  • organization → organization (same as US, unlike UK "organisation")
  • color → colour
  • center → centre
  • practice (noun) vs. practise (verb)
  • analyze → analyze (same as US)
  • labor → labour
  • license (noun) vs. licence (noun — Canadian prefers licence)

Set your document language to English (Canada) in Word or Google Docs so spellcheck catches the rest.

Metric vs. imperial

Where units matter — distances, weights, budgets — use metric unless the role specifically calls for imperial (US-facing sales, certain trades). "Managed a 150 km² service territory" reads natural in Canada.

Page length

  • Entry level or recent graduate: one page
  • 5–15 years experience: one or two pages, whatever tells the story cleanest
  • Senior, executive, or deeply specialized: two pages is expected

No Canadian recruiter has ever rejected a resume for being "too short." Plenty have skipped one for being too long.

Format and file type

  • Single column
  • Standard headers (Experience, Education, Skills)
  • Text-based PDF exported from Word or Google Docs
  • No tables, text boxes, or multi-column layouts
  • Filename convention: [Initial]_[LastName]_[Company]_Resume.pdf

A word on newcomers

If you are applying to Canadian jobs from outside the country or shortly after arriving, the resume itself is only half the battle.
